The phrase “Come and Take It” dates back to King Leonidas I defying the Persian army to take his army’s weapons with the phrase “Molon labe”” at the Battle of Thermopylae. The Gonzales flag itself was created by Sarah Seely DeWitt and her daughter, Evaline, from Noami DeWitt's wedding dress, an interesting tidbit that makes this adaptation for women's reproductive rights movement even more poignant.
Politicians have been chipping away at the protections for women to obtain the safe, legal, and essential reproductive health care they need. These include not only safe abortions, but other health care services including birth control, pregnancy care, annual exams, and cancer screenings, basic services necessary for women's well-being throughout their lives.
